Indications:
Venofer is a medicine that contains iron.
Medicines that contain iron are used when you do not have enough iron in your body. This is called “iron deficiency”.
 
Venofer is given when:
- you cannot take iron by mouth – such as if iron tablets make you feel sick.
- you have taken iron by mouth and the treatment has not worked.
 
Contraindications:
Do not take Venofer:
- if you are allergic (hypersensitive) to the medicine or any of the other ingredients of this medicine.
 
Precautions:
Talk to your doctor or pharmacist before taking Venofer.
 
Pregnancy, breast-feeding and fertility:
Venofer has not been tested in women in the first three months of pregnancy. It is important to tell your doctor if you are pregnant, think you may be pregnant or are planning to become pregnant.
If you become pregnant during treatment, seek medical advice.
Your doctor will decide whether or not you should take this medicine.
 
If you are breast-feeding, ask your doctor for advice before taking Venofer.
 
If you are pregnant or breast-feeding, ask your doctor or pharmacist for advice before taking any medicine.
 
Driving and using machines:
You may feel dizzy, confused or disoriented after being given Venofer. If this happens, do not drive or use machines. Ask your doctor if you are not sure.
 
Method of administration:
Your doctor will decide how much Venofer to give you. Your doctor will also decide how often and for how long you need this medicine. Your doctor will do a blood test to work out the dose you need.
 
Your doctor or nurse will give you Venofer in one of the following ways:
- slow injection into a vein – 1 to 3 times a week.
- as an infusion (drip) into a vein – 1 to 3 times a week.
- during dialysis – it will be given into the venous line of your dialysis machine dialysis.
Venofer will be administered in a location where immunoallergic reactions can be treated appropriately and promptly.
You will be monitored by a doctor or nurse for at least 30 minutes after each administration.

Composition:
- The active substance is iron (as iron(III) hydroxide-sucrose complex). Each 5 ml ampoule/vial contains 100 mg iron.
- The other ingredients are water for injections and sodium hydroxide.
