Indications:
Carboplatin belongs to a group of medicines called antineoplastics, platinum compounds.
It is used alone or in combination with other anticancer medicines, as first-line treatment or as an alternative treatment when other treatments have failed, in advanced epithelial ovarian cancer and small cell lung cancer.
Contraindications:
Do not use Carboplatin Teva:
- if you are allergic to carboplatin, other platinum-containing medicines or any of the other ingredients of this medicine.
Precautions:
Talk to your doctor or pharmacist before taking Carboplatin Teva.
Pregnancy, breast-feeding and fertility:
If you are pregnant or breast-feeding, think you may be pregnant or are planning to become pregnant, ask your doctor or pharmacist for advice before taking this medicine.
Pregnancy:
Carboplatin should not be used in pregnant women or in women of childbearing potential who could become pregnant unless strictly indicated by your doctor.
Before using this medicine, you must tell your doctor if you are pregnant (think you may be) or are planning to become pregnant.
You must use adequate contraception during treatment. Male patients being treated with Carboplatin Teva are advised not to father a child during treatment and for up to six months afterwards. Please ask your doctor for advice on what contraceptive measures you should use.
If you become pregnant during treatment with Carboplatin Teva, please tell your doctor and visit his/her office as soon as possible.
Breastfeeding:
Tell your doctor if you are breast-feeding or if you want to start breast-feeding. Carboplatin Teva is not recommended for mothers who are breast-feeding and your doctor may prescribe another treatment if you wish to breast-feed.
Fertility:
Carboplatin may cause genetic damage. You should not become pregnant during treatment with carboplatin. You should use effective contraception to prevent this. Ask your doctor for advice if this applies to you.
If you or your partner wish to father a child, this should be avoided during treatment with carboplatin and for 6 months after treatment. Ask your doctor for advice on the possibility of collecting and storing sperm before starting treatment.
Driving and using machines:
No studies have been performed on the effects of carboplatin on the ability to drive and use machines. Since carboplatin may cause nausea, vomiting, dizziness or hearing impairment, it is recommended that you do not drive or use machines until you have made sure that you do not experience such symptoms.
Method of administration:
Like other antineoplastic medicines, Carboplatin Teva should only be administered under the supervision of specialist physicians experienced in antineoplastic chemotherapy. Treatment is usually carried out in hospital.
Carboplatin Teva is administered only by intravenous infusion, after dilution in 5% glucose infusion solution.
The dose is determined by your doctor, who will adjust it individually for you, especially if you are an elderly patient, have received previous treatment with other cytostatics or have kidney problems.
The usual recommended dose in adult patients with normal renal function, not previously treated with another cytostatic, is 400 mg/m² administered as a short intravenous infusion (15-60 minutes).
The infusion will be given only under medical supervision, and your condition will be constantly checked to see how you react to it. If any problem occurs during the infusion, the medical staff will be prepared to take the necessary measures.
Normally, the infusion can be repeated every 4 weeks, but depending on the results of your regular blood tests, your doctor will decide when to resume or stop treatment.
In patients with risk factors, such as previous myelosuppressive treatments and/or an altered performance status, the initial dose should be reduced by 20-25%.
In patients with renal impairment, the dose of carboplatin should be reduced and periodic monitoring of haematological and renal function is recommended.
The optimal dose of carboplatin in combination with other myelosuppressive drugs should be modified depending on the regimen and therapeutic schedule of the other cytostatics used.
In patients over 65 years of age, dose adjustment may be necessary at the beginning of treatment, depending on the clinical situation.
Use in children and adolescents:
Due to limited data on efficacy and safety in children and adolescents, no recommendations can be made regarding the treatment of carboplatin in this population group.
If you have any further questions on the use of this medicine, ask your doctor or pharmacist.
